Description
The Atlas Gold 10004288 is a stunning HO scale model of the GE U30B locomotive, representing Norfolk & Western #8473 in eye - catching black and yellow. Note that the picture might show a different road number. Powered by a V16 FDL prime mover, this 3,000 h.p. locomotive was GE's response to EMD's GP40 and ALCO's C430. From 1966 to 1975, GE built 295 U30Bs. This is a 'phase 2' U30B, recognized by its evenly - built hood below the radiator. It can be distinguished from the U23B by two sets of four tall engine access doors. Norfolk & Western was the biggest owner of phase 2 U30Bs with 75 units, all having a high short hood. Other major owners were C&O, Frisco, and Western Pacific. Today, few of these locomotives are still in service. Features include a snow plow (when appropriate), separately - applied scale details like windshield wipers and metal grab irons, a five - pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for smooth performance, directional lighting with golden - white LEDs, and blackened metal wheels. Special features are an optional high short hood, low nose headlights, and different types of trucks according to the road name. The Atlas Master Series Gold version comes with an ESU LokSound decoder, flexible function key mapping, and over 20 sound effects. Remember, due to the sound system's higher starting voltage, you can't MU a non - sound - equipped loco in DC (analog) mode.
Using your Atlas Gold HO scale GE U30B locomotive is a breeze. First, make sure your track is clean and properly connected. Place the locomotive on the track and power on your DCC controller. Use the controller to set the speed and direction. You can also access different functions like the bell, horn, and engine sounds. When it comes to maintenance, regularly clean the wheels with a soft, dry cloth to ensure good electrical contact. Check the separately - applied scale details from time to time to make sure they are secure. If you need to clean the locomotive body, use a mild cleaner and a soft brush. For the sound system, be aware that it requires a higher starting voltage. In DC (analog) mode, you can't couple a non - sound - equipped locomotive with this one. Always follow the DCC programming instructions for the ESU LokSound decoder to make the most of its features.
