When it comes to making them look more real, you can use Woodland Scenics Earth Color Liquid Pigments (which you need to buy separately). Just apply the pigment to the portals to give them the color you want. As for maintenance, keep them away from rough handling to avoid chipping. If they get dirty, you can gently wipe them with a soft, dry cloth.
