Description
This is an HO scale Atlas 10004253 EMD GP40 - 2 model train locomotive representing Southern Pacific #7661 in red and gray. Note that the picture might show a different road number. The GP40 - 2 is EMD's successor to the highly successful GP40. It has internal upgrades like improved Dash 2 electrical components and some external differences from the late - production GP40, such as an engine water - level sight glass on the right, a larger electrical cabinet air filter box, a lengthened left - side battery compartment, and a slightly modified cab. All GP40 - 2s are powered by a 16 - cylinder EMD 645 - series diesel engine with 3,000 horsepower. Phase 2 GP40 - 2s from mid - 1976 to late - 1979 have features like an 88” low nose, corrugated radiator grilles, and notched step wells. Key features include golden - white LEDs, a realistic die - cast underframe, a high - performance motor, directional lighting, AccuMate® knuckle couplers, a detailed cab interior, separately - installed scale parts, movable drop steps, walkway safety tread, and more. Additional features are etched metal fans, dynamic brake options, and a 3,600 - gallon fuel tank. Undecorated units come with specific parts and options. It supports all DCC - programming modes, has flexible function key mapping, and six DCC function outputs, following NMRA standards. The LokSound Select Dual - Mode decoder allows use on both DC and DCC layouts. Over 20 sound effects, multiple user - selectable options, and manual/automatic notching modes add realism.
Using this HO scale model train locomotive is easy. First, if you're using a DCC layout, make sure the locomotive is set up to support all DCC - programming modes. You can flexibly map function keys F0 to F28 according to your needs. For DC operation, the LokSound Select Dual - Mode decoder enables the locomotive to work on DC layouts, but remember that the Atlas Quantum Engineer won't operate it on an analog (DC) layout. When using sound features, enjoy over 20 different sound effects. You can select different horns, bells, and brake squeals. In terms of notching modes, you can switch between manual and automatic 'on the fly' for a more realistic experience. As for maintenance, keep the locomotive clean. Wipe the exterior gently with a soft cloth to prevent dust accumulation. Check the moving parts regularly to ensure smooth operation. For the electrical components, avoid exposing the locomotive to excessive moisture or extreme temperatures. Also, when using on a DC - powered layout, don't consist it with a locomotive that doesn't have both DCC and sound.
