Description
The Atlas 10004204 is an HO scale model of the DASH 8-40C Canadian National locomotive, numbered #2017 in red and black colors. Note that the picture might show a different road number. Built by General Electric for Union Pacific in the late 1980s, the DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives are recognizable by their enlarged exhaust stack and square-like dynamic brake grid unit behind the cab with an enlarged equipment blower fan. These 4,000 hp six-axle engines are still in service in North America. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW, produced from 1989 to 1993, introduced GE’s wide-nose “North American Safety Cab,” a common sight on US railroads. Major railroads like Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe, and Union Pacific bought them in large numbers, and many are still in mainline and heavy-haul freight service. Due to mergers, they also operate for Norfolk Southern and BNSF. Upgraded features (2024 or later) include metal couplers, improved headlight/ditchlight color and brightness, independently controlled lit number boards and marker lights, better windshield glazing, etched metal windshield wipers, and a new cab side without sunshade mount track. Standard features include ditch lights, number boards, realistic die-cast underframe, AccuMate® knuckle couplers, detailed coupler cut bars, multiple unit and trainline hoses, a high-performance motor, separately-installed details, directional lighting, painted crew members, snowplow and piping on trucks, and a recommended minimum radius of 22”. The Atlas Master™ Series Gold offers DCC-programming support, flexible function key mapping, and compliance with NMRA standards. The ESU LokSound provides over 20 sound effects, user-selectable horns and bells, and manual and automatic notching modes for a realistic experience.
Using your Atlas DASH 8-40C locomotive is easy. First, make sure your track is clean and free of debris. Connect your DCC controller according to the instructions. You can control the locomotive's speed, direction, and functions using the controller. For sound effects, select the appropriate function keys. Remember to handle the locomotive gently, especially when connecting or disconnecting cars. When not in use, store it in a dry and safe place. To maintain your locomotive, clean the wheels regularly with a soft cloth to ensure good electrical contact. Check the couplers for any signs of wear and replace them if necessary. Also, keep an eye on the lighting and other details. If you notice any issues, refer to the manufacturer's troubleshooting guide or contact customer support.
