Description
The Atlas 10004199 is an HO scale model train of the DASH 8-40C Providence & Worcester #4050, featuring orange and yellow front and rear ditch lights, DCC, and sound functionality. Note that the picture might show a different road number. The DASH 8-40C diesel locomotives, first built for Union Pacific by General Electric in the late 1980s, are recognizable by an enlarged exhaust stack and square-like dynamic brake grids behind the cab with an enlarged equipment blower fan. These 4,000 hp six-axle engines are still in use in North America. The 4,000hp Dash 8-40CW, produced from 1989 to 1993, followed the successful Dash 8-40C and introduced GE's wide-nose 'North American Safety Cab,' a common sight on US railroads. Major railroads like Conrail, CSX, Santa Fe, and Union Pacific bought them in large numbers, and many are still in mainline and heavy-haul freight service. After mergers, they also operate for Norfolk Southern and BNSF. Upgraded features (2024 or later) include metal couplers, improved headlight/ditchlight color and brightness, independently controlled lit number boards and marker lights (for appropriate road names), improved windshield glazing, etched metal windshield wipers, and a new cab side without sunshade mount track (for appropriate road names). Other features are ditch lights, number boards, sand fill hatch, and marker lights (8-40CW only), a realistic die-cast underframe, factory-equipped AccuMate® knuckle couplers, a coupler pocket for AccuMate® Proto-couplers, highly detailed coupler cut bars, multiple unit and trainline hoses, a five-pole skewed armature motor with dual flywheels for smooth performance at all speeds, separately-installed scale windshield wipers, metal grab irons and fine scale handrails, directional lighting, painted crew members, snowplow and piping on trucks, and a recommended minimum radius of 22 inches. The Atlas Master™ Series Gold has additional features like support for all DCC-programming modes, flexible mapping of function keys F0 to F31, and compliance with all NMRA DCC standards. The ESU LokSound offers over 20 sound effects such as engine start-up and shutdown, prime mover sounds through all eight notches, bell, air horn, air compressor, dynamic brakes, etc. There are 16 user-selectable horns, 2 user-selectable bells, and 2 user-selectable synchronized brake squeals, along with manual and automatic notching modes for added realism.
Using your Atlas HO scale DASH 8-40C model train is easy. First, make sure your DCC system is set up correctly and compatible with the train's DCC functionality. Connect the train to the track and power on your DCC controller. You can then start programming the function keys according to your preference, like controlling the lights, sounds, and other features. When running the train, keep in mind the recommended minimum radius of 22 inches to avoid derailments. For maintenance, regularly clean the wheels and track with a soft cloth to ensure smooth operation. Check the couplers and hoses for any signs of wear or damage, and replace them if necessary. Store the train in a cool, dry place to prevent any damage to the delicate parts. Also, be careful when handling the train to avoid breaking the separately-installed scale windshield wipers, metal grab irons, and fine scale handrails. If you want to change the sound settings, you can easily select from the 16 user-selectable horns, 2 user-selectable bells, and 2 user-selectable synchronized brake squeals provided by the ESU LokSound. Enjoy your model train and have fun with it!
